Dr Gil Turingan

Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Faculty of History, University of Warsaw

Gil Turingan is a Filipino scholar and educator who specializes in Thai history and politics. He holds a Ph.D. in Thai Studies from Chulalongkorn University, where his research focuses on democracy discourses, memory politics, and student movements in Thailand, with particular attention to monuments and protests.

Gil’s academic journey began at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, where he earned a Master’s degree in Asian Studies in 2019, concentrating on Southeast Asia. He also obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History in 2010 and completed a Professional Teaching Certification Program from the University of the Philippines-Open University in 2014.

Recently, he published two articles: “Distinct Aesthetics of Democratic Memory: Thailand’s 14th of October 1973 Memorial and the Philippines’ Bantayog ng mga Bayani” in the International Journal of Heritage Studies, and “The Democracy Monument as a Symbol of Democracy in the 2023 Thai General Election” in the Thammasat Review.
